Abstract

This paper describes a qualitative study investigating narrative game design processes with young people serving custodial sentences in a secure children’s center in the North of England. Project Tech is a 5-day workshop that was delivered with 5 young offenders (ages 14-16). Participants designed and created narrative games using Twine exploring the consequences of positive and negative life choices. Thematic analysis revealed that lack of experience with games other than first person shooters was an impediment to the program. We report generally positive responses to Project Tech as an experience to instill confidence and meaning making for this at-risk group.
