Abstract

This paper aims to advance discussion about some of the ethical and practical issues related to work-based learning and income generation for design departments. It discusses the following questions about a commercial route to funding: 1. Can the academic learning outcomes of a design student’s course be met by a client-initiated service brief? 2.If design courses take fees for student projects, does that compromise relations with the design industry? The paper classifies types of projects and uses case studies of recent ‘live briefs’ that BA Graphic Communication staff and students from Bath Spa University have been involved with. It discusses some of the merits and pitfalls associated with these work-based learning briefs, when money is involved. The examples show mixed success and issues with certain kinds of projects. It concludes that academic learning outcomes can be met by these projects and that the design industry and universities should celebrate them.
