Abstract

This volume is a collection of essays about spatial politics from perspectives defined across differing interests and disciplines. Authors representing a spectrum of research, form philosophy, fine art, architecture and geo-politics are gathered together to address the question of space as it is represented and practiced in visual art. The twin avatars that bracket the volume in the context of space as location, are Robert Smithson’s concept of ‘the place that is not itself’, the Nonsite, and contemporary artists, Pieer Huyghe’s poetic invocation of the transitoriness of post-urban dwelling, the ‘Celebration’ type of housing communities represented in his film, Streamside Day.
