| Abstract: | The six painters in this exhibition have been selected for their interest in the metaphorical interpretation of urban spaces and their talent for capturing a human touch within our towns and cities. The city, with its transitory population, can be a lonely place – as one person comes another person goes away – but the tracks left behind form shadows and echoes that are both haunting and inspirational. The pictures in this show communicate a human presence: viewers will find themselves searching for evidence of human activity in derelict areas of the city such as modern hotels, landfill sites, the city’s waterways and quiet recreation areas. Exhibiting artists: Günther Herbst, Julie Fountain, Rosie Snell, Joanna Billingham, Alexandra Baraitser and Fred Crayk. Curators: Julie Fountain/Alexandra Baraitser. |

| Note: | Rosie Snell is renowned for her paintings of post-nuclear pastoral and suburban environments. Her research takes on board the physical and psychological impact of war upon humanity, the lack of human presence gives her works an unnerving autonomy. In “Awaiting Clearance” we see the 21st century’s impact on Greenland; there is no landfill available for city dwellers and so the detritus is clear to see. |
