Winterreise: life performances

Neudecker, M (2005) Winterreise: life performances. Touring performance/exhibition, 2005.

Item Type: Exhibition
Creators: Neudecker, M
Abstract: Neudecker was asked to create a visual counterpoint to Schubert's song cycle Winterreise and jointly commissioned by Opera North and Leeds City Art Gallery in 2003. The resulting work is a visual reflection of Wilhelm Müller's tale of unrequited love, despair and suicide; of a rejected lover who travels from the door of the woman he loves into a frozen landscape. It is a series of short-films, one for each of the twenty-four Lieder, made in locations following the line of latitude 60 degrees North, in places that experience snow-capped winters; the Shetland Islands, Helsinki, Oslo and St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, the songs (in German with some English subtitles) chart the physical and psychological journey of the rejected lover through a frozen landscape. Winterreise re-visits the atmospheric representations of sublime landscape vistas created within glass tanks filled with water, salt solutions and dyes that Neudecker made previously and were widely shown nationally and internationally.
