Dr Jo Turney: a wardrobe study

Turney, J (2010) Dr Jo Turney: a wardrobe study. Bath School of Art and Design Gallery, Sion Hill, Bath, 1 - 5 November 2010.

Item Type: Exhibition
Creators: Turney, J
Abstract: Dr Turney will put on display hundreds of her own garments - in fact the entire contents of her wardrobe. She will also encourage visitors to the exhibition to try on some of her clothes in a changing room and make comments about them. Meanwhile Dr Turney will be there dressed in clothing borrowed from friends and colleagues in Bath School of Art and Design for the occasion. This unique interactive event, taking place over five days, can also be seen via a live webcam feed from the gallery to the Schools website. Here participants in the exhibition and online viewers can also give their opinion about the Turney dress sense. Dr Turney says it is not intended as an art installation but as a cultural study of a contemporary wardrobe: "Complete wardrobe contents are rarely available to museums, which are very selective in their choice from donated clothing, so a complete picture of what was worn during a specific period by a specific person has been impossible to establish. My exhibition aims to redress this imbalance. As visitors shift from the traditional role of spectator to the active role of participant, they can challenge how our clothing defines our personal identity." Dr Turney will also document how she reacts to wearing other people's clothes and whether her style of dress is influenced accordingly. All this will feature in a book she is planning about her week of experiences with her own clothes and those of visitors to the exhibition. The Wardrobe Study exhibition is being held in the Sion Hill, Bath School of Art and Design Gallery, at Sion Hill in Bath, from Monday 1 to Friday 5 November.
