The two pieces 'Earthgrip' and 'Wormhole' which I submitted for this exhibition were examples of work produced within the body of research I have been conducting as outlined in Outcome 1 (Ceramic Contemporaries 4). The titles of these pieces illustrate development of these themes, in particular ideas around the role of time in the work. 'Earthgrip' refers to an ancient name for a burial as well as the process of making the ceramic form around a void, and the relationship to fossil evidence. 'Wormhole' deliberately refers to science fiction, giving a tension between futuristic and ancient characteristics in the work.

This is a very long running International juried competition, held at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza. The competition in 2003 attracted 2800 entered works by1203 entrants from 62 countries. Of these 51 works from 37 artists were selected for exhibtion by the jury. The works I submitted were awarded the 3rd prize after viewing the actual works on arrival in Italy.

The recognition involved in the competition exhibition led to me being invited to judge the Ceramics competition of the Slovenian Society for Ceramics in April 2004.
