These biographical sketches summarise all that is known about these two influential and famous lutenist-composers of the early seventeenth century. Much of the primary research on the music and biographies of these musicians was done by me. The emphasis here is not on their music but on their importance to the nation's culture, in the case of Johnson as the musician closest to Shakespeare, and in that of Gaultier as the most prominent French musician at the Court of Charles I.
