John Case - The Musical World of an Oxford Theorist.

This article discusses the relationship between John Case, a leading Oxford academic in the 1580s and 90s, and Mathew Holmes the precentor of Christ Church Cathedral until 1597. Holmes was responsible for teaching the choir boys music, something he did through practical music making, the results of which can be seen in the Cambridge mixed consort parts books. This was a period in which divine music in the colleges was under attack from the puritan left, and Case was instrumental in saving it through his celebrated Defence of Music and other works, themselves based on classical authorities.
