Abstract

In recent years there has been a trend towards the internationalisation of fieldwork. The local area or region remains an undervalued and often underutilised resource for fieldwork. However, fieldwork projects undertaken locally offer opportunities for the co-production of research by staff and students, and an enhancement of the research-teaching nexus. This paper examines the opportunities and issues facing local research projects by involving students, and examines how the co-production of research can be effectively integrated into the curriculum at all undergraduate levels. Our case study outlines the setting up and operation of a monitoring programme of a recently-active shallow landslip located close to the campus of Bath Spa University. The establishment of this medium-term field project bridges the research-teaching nexus as well as facilitating engagement with local stakeholders. The project has provided a local field resource for introductory training in field methods and techniques at Year 1, research planning and execution at Year 2, and dissertation projects at Year 3. Such application across different undergraduate levels has provided students with insights into research, facilitated the sharing of experience, as well as making the learning more relevant and raising aspirations through examples of student and staff work.
