Abstract

There are three parts to this chapter. The first seeks to explain the philosophical origins and assumptions of instrumental rationality. This is the ‘useful but blind’ (McGuigan, 2006, p.171) variant of reason that is concerned for procedures that leaves unquestioned the purposes of reasoning. The second attempts to show how instrumental rationality has inveigled its way into educational discourses of late and become normalised. The third links instrumental rationality with capitalism by showing that many of the secreted purposes contained in these educational discourses are primarily destined to secure a trained and disciplined labour force.
