Lindow Moss: a place of finding

Vaughan, S (2008) Lindow Moss: a place of finding. Manchester Museum, 13 December 2008 - 12 July 2009.

Item Type: Exhibition
Creators: Vaughan, S
Abstract: This photographic exhibition documents the landscape at Lindow Moss; the mysterious place where the preserved body of Lindow Man was found. The photographer, Stephen Vaughan grew up next to Lindow Moss in the 1970s and 1980s and returned in 2000 to make an extensive four year photographic document of this dramatic landscape. The resulting exhibition was nominated for the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2005. Vaughan's photographs capture the slow passage of time in the landscape, recording small changes in the surface and revealing layers of distant centuries. As the landscape is rapidly disappearing due to peat digging, the photographs also respond to the urgency to record this 'place of finding', before it is completely emptied and destroyed.
