Abstract

Work-based learning is an essential part of any Education Studies course, providing a unique opportunity to experience and reflect upon workplace activities in order to enrich, supplement and support the learning that takes place within the university. This chapter provides a theoretically focused discussion of the nature of work-based learning that occurs on placements: why it is important, what it entails and how learning takes place. This will then be discussed within the context of reflective practice as an important feature of continuing professional development (CPD). The chapter will conclude with a case study of work based learning within a professional masters programme. Lessons from this experience are drawn to identify how students can gain the most from work-based learning on undergraduate placements.
