Abstract
Artist, Keith Harrison, Jodie Bishop and other members of the Plymouth project team shared insights into the challenges and rewards of working together to deliver an ambitious, creatively risky art work and public event which involves placing a huge 100 tonne ‘wave breaker’ concrete block on the Breakwater in Plymouth Sound. The inspiration came from a work in the museum's maritime paintings collection, entitled ‘Laying the Foundation Stone of Plymouth Breakwater’ by George Barret the Younger, 1812. As in previous commissions, Harrison’s aim was to make a hidden process public, in this case the unceasing work that goes into maintaining the City's sea defences. Bringing the project to fruition involved the museum staff developing relationships with the Ministry of Defence and the team of engineers responsible for maintaining the Breakwater.
