Abstract

This contextual chapter gives a topology of Bath's musical life during the first part of the nineteenth-century. It challenges the perception that Bath's music activity was in general decline, and argues rather that it was changing and adapting to circumstance. The chapter deals the Bath's musical families, the theatres, places of religion, assembly rooms and concert life, pleasure gardens, shops and music trade. It considers the most active musicians in the city at the time and their professional lives.
