Abstract
In this paper I argue against individualist/isolationist readings of the project of self-cultivation in the works of both Nietzsche and Zhuangzi. In particular I argue for understanding the role of solitude in their respective thinking as (a.) a transpersonal exercise and (b.) a means toward self-cultivation rather than an end in its own right. By means of this comparison I reframe their philosophical contributions in terms of the challenges they present to straightforward distinctions between inner (private/spiritual) and outer (public) life.
