Abstract

This chapter will discuss how placements and work-based learning are used in Education Studies degrees, providing some perspective on the development of this form of activity within academic courses, with particular reference to the situation in England. The rationale for placements and learning in workplaces is explored, and issues relating to employability and professional formation discussed. It is explained that education studies programmes have absorbed content and structure both from academic studies of education and from previous teacher education programmes. This has contributed to an emphasis on the importance of experience in educational settings. The chapter will contain a series of questions and activities designed to prompt discussion and reflection on these themes.
