Also composition (solo): This is a dance score commissioned by Rambert Dance Company. It premiered at Brighton Theatre Royal in February 2007, had a week-long run at London Sadler's Wells in May 2007, and will be toured across the UK from autumn 2007. I was commissioned to write for London Musici, Rambert's resident ensemble. Since most of my recent musical work has been electronic in nature, I wanted to make something that used this experience and knowledge and kept the focus firmly on the timbral aspects of the music, whilst responding to this opportunity and challenge. Rob Millett (ensemble percussionist) proved a catalyst in the process - I discovered that he had a large collection of appropriated and 'junk' percussion. From this starting point, I evolved a distinctive and quite extreme sonic vocabulary, which seemed a perfect match to the virtuosic choreography of the piece. In this, I was influenced by a variety of non-western (primarily gamelan) music, but I believe the timbres I use are quite distinctive - this is the result of unusual instrumentation and live electronic processing. The music is extremely minimalist in style and form, to allow the attention of the listener to focus on the resultant sonorities. I intend to explore this 'electro-mechanical' sound world further in future research.
