Abstract
A visitor to Britain in 1868-9, Sir Syed researched at the British Museum; interacted with Charles Darwin, Thomas Carlyle and several other well-known Victorians besides visiting Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol. On his return to India, he founded the first-ever modern Muslim college at Aligarh, which in 1920 became a full-fledged university. Mr Mahmood Masood, the great-grandson of Sir Syed also spoke at the occasion. E M Forster had, in fact, dedicated his well-known novel, 'A Passage to India' to Sir Ross Masood, Mahmood’s grandfather and Sir Syed’ grandson.
