Abstract

The traditional logic of ‘aid’ has been challenged by the ‘emerging powers’. This also represented in the field of education. This paper will examine how China is creating its own way of educational support for African countries. Although not contradict with the Western discourse, the Chinese aid has foci mainly on higher and vocational level of education, claimed as a part of its ‘strategic win-win relationship’ with Africa. This paper reports on field work in Tanzania and China with Chinese and Tanzanian officials, university leaders and Tanzanian returning students. The study tries to reveal the increasing recognition of a distinct ‘China model’ which may not be unique on means but distinct on building relationships within educational practice. Although subject to criticism, the model is hoped to avoid some traditional pitfalls and opens another way for the understanding of aid.
