Abstract: | ‘Art at the Heart of the RUH’ is an award winning art and design programme operating in an acute healthcare setting. The programme aims to stimulate healing and well-being and create an uplifting environment for patients, visitors and staff. In 2016 ‘Art at the Heart of the RUH’ commissioned artist Dr Michele Whiting to design and create artworks for the new Pharmacy building at RUH based around the theme of “drugs from plants”. Michele Whiting liaised with Dr Sarah Bailey and a team of drug discovery researchers in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, at the University of Bath, whose research is based in developing ‘drugs from plants’ for the treatment of depression and cancer (Dr Sarah Bailey, Dr Lorenzo Caggiano and Prof Steve Husbands). Michele also spent time in the research labs, talked to drug discovery researchers and observed the mark making and notation used by the researchers in recording and reporting their work. This inspired a series of works that was presented to a pharmacy staff workshop at RUH for comment. Sarah and Michele worked together to lead a discussion about the science and the inspiration for the artwork which related to the natural world and pharmaceutical research. The works titled ‘The Art of Research’ evolved through this discursive process. |

Number of Pieces: | 8 |

Note: | ‘Drawings reveal the process of their own making-their own looking’(Berger J.1972). Drawing is an immediate way of articulating what is being seen and experienced, it is a way of know-ing; this suite of eight drawings represents aspects of current research and the act of ‘being in’ the laboratories at the University of Bath, supported by Sarah Bailey. Dialogue with re-searchers at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology acted as points of departure, as well as considering the site of the RUH and the language of drawing exploring the prima-cy of laboratory language as a mode of discovery. The completed drawings are small places that are less purposeful, ambiguous perhaps, where we can just look and draw breath. The photographs below show 2 of the 4 large scale artworks (appox 950 x 1.5) and four smaller works that are now displayed within the new Pharmacy building which opened in June 2017. |
