Abstract

My conference presentation was entitled: ‘Enriching Communities through Culture: Transformatory Art Educational Projects in UNESCO World Heritage Centres, Bath and Delhi.’ Based onongoing qualitative research into the educational and socio-economic impact of cultural heritage arts projects within post-industrial and developing countries, it explored two contrasting arts and heritage educational case study projects, and their transformatory effect on communities. Both projects are based within UNESCO World Heritage sites: our own city of Bath, focusing on the Holburne Museum; and Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, India. Each project engages cultural professionals, contemporary artists, educational and social institutions, with local community groups and settings, to create inclusive opportunities for cultural access for hard-to-reach and marginalized participants. In both the Bath and Delhi case studies, cultural heritage art educational projects enrich the UNESCO sites’ profiles, extending educational, socio-economic and personal potential across a wide catchment of participants, incorporating diverse: ages, abilities, physical and mental health capacities, economic and social circumstances including homelessness and social exclusion. The research investigation considered the impact of inclusive art educational strategies, predicated on charitable, private and public investment in cultural heritage, in generating inclusive models of progressive cultural and social intervention, to address current urban challenges.
