Abstract: | We walk at a time and place of our choosing in solidarity with those who had no choice. Forced Walks: Honouring Esther works with the testimony of the Yiddish actor, Bundist and human rights activist, Esther Brunstein. In August 1944 Esther was transported from Auschwitz with a group of Polish Jewish women to a slave labour camp at Hambuhren, Ovelgönne. On the 4th February 1945, the camp was cleared, those who had survived were forced to walk to Bergen-Belsen camp. She was liberated from Bergen-Belsen to Sweden later in 1945. Inspired by Esther’s story and her spirit of resilience, artists Richard White and Lorna Brunstein, Esther’s daughter, wove testimony, poetry and reflection through a series of performative walks. The route of the death march was transposed to Somerset, Richard White led a 2 day walk-in-witness as close to that route as possible on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Belsen in 2015. The following year he hosted a walk on the actual route to Belsen arriving on the same day as Esther did exactly 71 years later. The walks, tracing and retracing the route of the death march, sought to acknowledge past events and generate contemporary resonances. Launched in Bristol on Holocaust Memorial Day 2015, the opening phase, a 2 day walk of the route transposed to Somerset, UK was completed on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Belsen. The cycle of walks was completed in Germany in February 2016. |
