Abstract: | The Depraved Appetite of Tarrare the Freak is an original puppet chamber opera, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England, which explores the true story of 18th-century French medical anomaly Tarrare. Calvert-Ennals, Director of the show, investigated the role of the director in the dramaturgy of puppetry, music and historical archive material in live performance. Through this project she developed frameworks for creating a coherent narrative and journey and a fully fleshed out character in a process with multiple creative elements (puppetry, live original music, libretto, archive material) and disparate artistic, ethical and intellectual stakes. |
