Abstract: | Bodmin Whale (2 mins 16 secs) draws on the knowledge that this area of Cornwall was once beneath the sea. The film’s content is constructed from movement material sourced from a site-specific improvisation and centers on a rock that, at this point in its ‘wearing down’, manifests the shape of a whale, as if it were a memorial statue to the location’s history. An additional layer of the film is the snap revelation of the filming event itself, turning the reading of the work from the direct relationship between the subject (dancer and rock) and viewer to a more triangulated viewing experience that embraces subject, viewer, and filmmaker(s). |
