Abstract
This entry provides an introduction to the topic of motherhood and the media, taking notions of the “good” mother and the ideology of intensive mothering in the pronatalist period as its starting point, looking to the ways in which romanticized images of selfless and serene maternal figures are exploited and debunked in the contemporary entertainment marketplace in general, and the television sitcom in particular.
