Abstract: | John Wood and Paul Harrison met in 1988 at the Bath College of Higher Education (now Bath Spa University) and have been working together since 1993. Wood and Harrison make videos, multi-screen video installations, prints, drawings and sculptures that form an elegant mix of advanced aesthetic research and existential comedy. Their sober, nail-on-the-head work reveals -- through the actions of their own bodies, a wide range of static or moving props, or combinations of both -- the victories and tribulations of the artist's life and illustrate life's abruptness and absurdity. The videos have a strict internal logic that includes the action's direct relationship to the duration of the recording. Things happen in this logical world without real reason, tensions arise between environment and person, the game becomes heightened and the influences on the work are deliberately mixed up. In their experiments with movement and materials, described by reviewer Tom Lubbock described as 'sculptural bloopers', Wood and Harrison's use of exaggerated inventions, subtle slapstick and a touch of lighthearted melancholy reveal the inspiration and perspiration behind all creative actions.
