Swancutt, K.D (2017) The altered surface: a technical investigation into hand stitch and fold interventions on fabric. PhD thesis, Bath Spa University.
Abstract
This research examines how a cloth surface might be altered by using folding and hand stitch, where the majority of the sampling is executed on cloth with no linking or joining. Both the practice and the writing takes as a starting point the original research done during an M.A. in Design Textiles and further developed during the early years of the PhD. This research is a practice led enquiry that looks at techniques and patterns that animate the surface of a piece of cloth with the assistance of the fold, needle and thread. It records the technical findings and the experience of making, indicating future applications. The dialogue between the making, recording and the writing is integral to the outcome of the project. The contribution to knowledge is demonstrated by the extensive practical experimentation and the recording and analysis of the samples provided as a signifier for future use and investigation possibilities. The body of research consists of the thesis and a body of practical work containing two hundred and fifty samples and three finished art pieces that establish the studio practice undertaken during the research. Chapter 1, the introduction outlines the landscape of the enquiry and Chapter 2 provides the contextual information. Chapter 3 outlines the design methodology for the project whilst Chapter 4 is devoted to the exploration from a hand stitched perspective with further contextual evidence. Chapter 5 contains the research collection shown in the record cards that contain all the relevant information for each sample including process description and future applications. Chapter 6 is an evaluation of the three finished pieces and the final Chapter 7 is the conclusion and includes future research possibilities.
