Abstract

This chapter will explore the dilemmas that we as disabled academics encounter when deciding to access ‘reasonable adjustments’ in order to help remove potential barriers to employment, whilst also wanting to portray an academic identity that is authentic and not defined by our disability or need for support. We explore these dilemmas by using ideas from social practice theories, by arguing that the way things are typically ‘done’ in academic contexts shape the difficulties that disabled academics may encounter. We will then move on to describe how university ‘social practices’ can be changed to be more inclusive of people’s diverse needs.
