Abstract
Tik Tok has taken the world by storm. It has provided millions of people with entertainment and a creative outlet during a time where a large number of people have felt isolated. In amongst this creativity and community spirit, there is a growing concern of surveillance and data-farming in the app. There are "subtle" ways of acquiring data (location tracking/profile information). But, what if there are more direct ways to manipulate users into giving away personal information? This article will focus on the "challenges" of Tik Tok that (on the surface) promote a sense of community but also coerce the user to divulge a large amount of personal data. Does the acquisition of data need to be indirect when users can provide it freely? This paper aims to explore an insidious undertone of this creative powerhouse.
