Neudecker, M (2021) Deep sea (2017-2019) [REF2021 collection].

Item Type: Artefact
Creators: Neudecker, M
Abstract: The works developed for Deep Sea resulted from Mariele Neudecker's collaboration with scientists and explore the hidden, often contradictory, aspects of the deep ocean. Focusing on the theme of the sublime in a contemporary context Neudecker questions our perceptions of, relationship to and impact on this invisible world. This Collection comprises a multi-component output with contextualising information, providing evidence of principle works shown in exhibitions, in the items below: The Improbable Always Happens Sometimes (1 & 2) (2017), an immersive, 12-screen installation across two floors; One More Time (2017), a video installation tracking the 8.62m giant squid in a formaldehyde-filled tank in London’s Natural History Museum; and The Improbable Always Happens Sometimes (Sediment) (2017) and The Improbable Always Happens Sometimes (Descent) (2017), consisting of mixed media works in museum cabinets and wall hung photographs respectively. Contextualising information includes a 300 word statement, research timeline, and research questions.
