Johnson, R.M (2022) Dynamic reflection - the global pandemic 2022: linkage to flood ‘Disaster Risk Reduction’. In: International Conference on Climate Change, Natural Hazards and Sustainable Livelihoods, 12 - 13 March 2022, University of Delhi, Delhi, India [online].

Abstract

Global society and economies continue to endure, adjust to, mitigate and begin to recover from the global Covid-19 pandemic. As students, educators, scholars, researchers, policy makers and practitioners, we should take a moment to pause and reflect, in order that we may effectively distil our key observations from this major event, and from these together follow a pathway to a better world. Whilst this is just the latest major check or intersection for global society, it is one we should make every effort to learn from. ‘Building Back Better’ is a central tenet of prevailing Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Frameworks and National Plans, and is also heavily related to our common pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In exploring these themes, we will briefly signpost: (1) The importance of formative life moments we individually and collectively experience (2) Rationales and approaches from three multi-disciplinary/ multi-lateral research projects in the Indian Himalaya Region which consider flood hazards/ disasters in the Kullu District. These provide case studies of the need for and benefit of collaborative approaches to link DRR and SDGs (3) Reflections from our India research journey- to enhance our future research contributions to these societal challenges.
