Abstract: | ‘Demonstrations’ are live performances from videos made for YouTube. As part of the non-static element of the exhibition, audiences are invited to work with Luzar who will start by - and then let audiences lead onto - showing ambiguous actions, which can appear either as militant protests or non-performative DIY tasks. These works first appear on the Internet as ‘how to’ videos, which parody DIY - with undertones of political demonstrations, showing audiences step-by-step actions, using subtitles to outline possibilities of changing the work. |

Note: | A group exhibition addressing change and precariousness through daily performances, drawings, videos and ephemera by Robert Luzar, Greig Burgoyne, Lucy O’Donnell and Joe Graham. The exhibition is curated by Laura Bottin and Béa Kayani. Restless Linings are approaches that address work, uncertainty, and change. Economic uncertainty, or “precarious labour”, acts as a background from which these approaches take place over certain stages. Temporary jobs, reserve labour, debt; there are many ways of describing the precarious, which is very much a common struggle – with the horizon of social and structural change flickering somewhere beyond. In this exhibition, drawing plays a big role in setting stages that reflect this time of the precarious. Live-art performances, videos, installations and ephemeral materials shift drawing from the familiar (works-on-paper, paperwork) and over to certain stages of uncertainty. Stages where a work seems to begin and––possibly, maybe not always––change. Stages where artist––and audience members––are exposed to situations or demonstrations… of protest, enthusiasm, collapse, or discontent. There are a variety of stages for the restless. The social linings where many or few, artist or audience, struggle with tasks, decisions and actions ––without being certain––of what to do, how to create, where to go. The artists will appear either staging performances, day-by-day, or inviting audiences to also manipulate and change the works entirely. Video documentation of audience participation with Robert Luzar's work 'Demonstrations' can be viewed at the links below. They are titled 'Demonstration 7: how to bag one's air (performed live)', and 'Demonstration 12: how to stretch (performed live)'. |
