Abstract
The history of the Palestinian education sector is geographically and institutionally fragmented and politically charged. This chapter will look at Palestinian school education in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, through the lens of Amartya Sen’s capability approach. It will explore how and to what extent the education sector builds Palestinian children’s capabilities, how their environment limits their learning process, the governance of the education sector and the quality of the educational services available. The Palestinian education sector is functioning under occupation, so it is limited with its ability to expand its infrastructure, its curriculums are scrutinised and censored and its cadres face restrictions on movement. The current state of the education sector reveals several deficiencies, which affects the capability building of Palestinian children.
