'Inter' was conceived as a means of considering how our visual understanding of a built inner city environment is conditioned by, and conditions, our representations of that environment. Structured as a collaboration between myself and Matei Bejenaru - Romanian artist and Director of the Periferique Bienalle. the project began by exchanging spoken descriptions of the street outside two galleries - ROOM in Bristol and Vector in Iasi Romania. Each artist then produced a group of images based on the other's description. Both sets of images and videos of the descriptions were shown simultaneously in both galleries. A series of talks and presentations at each gallery discussed how the degree of discrepancy between a description by someone 'local' and the subsequent inaccurate images by someone who has never seen the place, were the result of cultural difference.
A catalogue with an essay by myself and text work by Matei Bejenaru was produced. Related presentations were given at Iasi School of Art and a paper presented at the Transversalities conference at Reading University.
Digital images produced for the project were later exhibited at Room Gallery in a separate exhibition.
