Realism was a group show held at Flowers East, London in 2003. It included 10 artists working in a realist manner. The painting 'Undertow' was included. The image was of a British 'Hunter Killer' submarine, sourced from a BBC film. Continuing from my research into the military, I decided to use this haunting but confrontational imagery to explore my own and others reactions. There is a conflict between the desire to know more, to be privy to the vocabulary of power, and the instinct to deplore the intrusion. There are conflicts of emotion too; between the fear of the destructive potential of the machines themselves, and the comforting security they offer.

As a result of 'Realism' a catalogue was produced, ISBN 1-902945-37-9, (introduction written by Edward Lucie-Smith).
