Note: | This publication emerges from a key focus for my research since my doctoral studies (Royal College of Art, 1991), that of the nature and condition of the British ceramic industry since 1945. My concern has been to explore the nature of influences - cultural, political and design-related upon the industry, investigating how these have been reflected in company policy and products. My research has produced fruitful outcomes in a number of different contexts. In this example my analysis of the experiences of designers in the industry, explored via surveys of both published (trade) and unpublished (government record) sources has been translated for a wider audience. It is an attempt to balance the historical record with the visual record of designers work, and to demonstrate to readers the complexity of influences upon designers during the 1960s and the companies that employed them. |
