'Solaroid', the sculpture submitted for this exhibition is part of the ongoing research outlined under Output 1 (Ceramic Contemporaries 4), and this exhibition provided an opportunity for it to be judged and exhibited at the highest international level. It illustrates how the spiral has become an increasingly important motif within my work; its rigidly systematic form is indicative of both organic growth and man-made objects and thus undermines the opposition commonly ascribed to these aesthetics. On a functional level the negative space left by a spiral allows the creation of complex, undercut, internal voids. The spiral form also implies movement and reinforces the investigation that the work makes into the relationship between mass and void. The mass of the ceramic surrounds and records the ephemeral movement of the void form.

My work was one of 188 selected from 2444 submissions by an international jury comprising Janet MANSFIELD (Australia, IAC President), Tapio YLI-VIIKARI (Finland, Professor of Helsinki Art and Design University), Jim SUPANGKAT (Indonesia, Independent Curator), Soo-Hong JAHNG (Korea, Professor of Korea National University) and Jin-Sup YOON (Korea, Professor of Honam University).
