Lees, N (2004) Commission of 2 sculptures - 'Jewel of the Seas' by London Contemporary Art.

Item Type: Artefact
Creators: Lees, N
Date: 1 January 2004

Location: 'Jewel of the Seas', A Royal Caribbean International cruise liner.
This commission was the result of my work being seen in exhibition by a director of LCA. The company were looking for artworks on the theme of landscape to fit into particular niches on the stairwell of a cruise liner. This involved me taking the outcomes from my research into an applied area and submitting a proposal for new pieces of work made for the particular context. The constraints imposed by this led to the development of new ways of considering and using some of the conceptual and formal elements that have contributed to my body of research. The solution to the issues raised, in the form of columns, has led to some new thinking in terms of the relationship between architectural and natural elements in the work.
