Morton Feldman: Clarinet and string quartet & Christopher Fox: Clarinet quintet

"I have worked with Fox for over 25 years and have commissioned a number of pieces from him. I gave the first German performance of his 'Clarinet Quintet' at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik with the Arditti String Quartet in 1994, and have played this piece on numerous occasions, most recently with the Smith Quintet. This is the first recording. I played Feldman's 'Clarinet and String Quartet' in London in 1984 with the Arditti String Quartet with Feldman present at the rehearsals and in the audience for the concert. This began for me a journey of exploration which resulted in numerous performances and a recording of his 'Bass clarinet and Percussion' and a specially commissioned work for multi-tracked clarinet and voice (Brenda Mitchell) from Feldman's widow, and stylistically similar composer, Barbara Monk Feldman. Fox was also familiar with Feldman having met him in Darmstadt, and there are similarities between the compositional styles making this a significant pairing of works" - Roger Heaton.
