Turney, J, Langkjaer, M and Sigurjonsdottir, A, eds. (2011) Images in time: flashing forward, backward, in front and behind photography in fashion, advertising and the press. Wunderkammer, Bath. ISBN 9780956646224
Abstract
When looking at a photograph what does one see? What stories do images elicit and how can photography be used as a means of validating or questioning notions of the clothed body as an indicator of lived culture/s? Can such imagery illicit discussion of both clothing production and consumption, of industry, professionalism and the impact and use of technology? Images in Time offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of photography and dress and emerges in response to research undertaken under the umbrella term ‘Wardrobe’. The book draws together international critical writings from scholars in anthropology, history, social sciences, the humanities and fashion studies, as well as photographic practitioners and museum curators and archivists, in an attempt to critique and valorise photography as a significant medium in the creation of wider socio-cultural discourse.
