Abstract:
'The Watertower' (2010) is an interactive installation that reveals the rich history of Selly Oak Hospital, and presents the memories and opinions of past and current patients as they confront the relocation of care services to the new Birmingham Queen Elizabeth site. Built in the Half Life 2 games engine, The Watertower offers participants a virtual reality tour of three levels of the iconic Selly Oak watertower, styled from floor to roof as a Victorian workhouse, a WW2 hospital, and a vision of the future respectively. The Watertower was designed and built by Masters level students at Birmginham City University's Visualisation Research Unit, and is a collaboration between the VRU, Selly Oak Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Trust.
