Hyland, P (2014) What was the Enlightenment? In: Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) Christmas Lecture, 12 December 2014, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI), Bath, UK.
Abstract
At the beginning of the 18th century a distinctly modern vision of life was emerging: by its close, revolutions in America and France had revealed the power of new beliefs about human nature, rights and duties, and a new faith in the idea of progress. As people began to change the way they thought about themselves and the world, a whole new way of thinking developed, which still has an overwhelming impact today.
