Abstract
This chapter fills a timely need of understanding the nature of religious conversion in the Buddhist tradition. It situates the issue of religious conversion in contemporary context and examines relevant Buddhist terminology and their nuances with an insight to the historical Buddha's attitude to religious conversion. As a mass conversion, the case of Dalits (India) in 1956 is considered. It also examines contemporary Buddhist responses to religious conversion with a focus on contemporary Sri Lanka.
