Abstract
Oliver Cromwell's contemporary reputation precedes much of the modern interpretation of his life. He is at one and the same time, a soldier; a great general; a regicide and a king killer; religious fanatic and non-conformist hero; a proto-fascist and a tyrant, or a liberal constitutionalist, Lord Protector and the precursor of modern constitutional democracy.
