Abstract
The Romantic Hero, in all his Byronic gloom, is a direct descendant of the Gothic Hero of the 18th century. William Hughes will outline the development of this precursor to the Romantic Hero through the 18th century novels of Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe and Matthew (‘Monk’) Lewis, which form a starting point to consider the transgressive themes in which this Gothic figure became progressively associated. Discussion will turn to the poetry and fragmentary fiction of Lord Byron
