"As well by the English as by the Strangers": the presence of the stranger in civic pageantry

Paper presented as part of the session entitled 'Strangers in the City: Migration, Identity and Place 1200–1700'. This session addressed the overarching question of the impact of migration on medieval and early modern towns and cities, and in turn the ways in which migrants and migrant communities themselves have been affected by their ‘host’ cities and by experiences of arrival and settlement.
