In the context of the globalization of higher education, the competition of higher education institutions is increasing both on a national and a global scale. Modernization of higher education in the Russian Federation, taking into account the challenges of the time, makes it necessary to rethink the interaction of the university and the city in Russian conditions. This article examines the establishment of well-known European universities in the context of urban socio-economic and cultural-historical space - from the Middle Ages to the present day. A brief historical outline of the developmental peculiarities of the famous universities of Great Britain, Germany, France, Poland is given, their role in the formation of modern spaces of university cities is analyzed, the problem of harmonious integration of historical campuses into the infrastructure of such cities and ways of solving it in the countries under consideration are explored.
