Abstract: | Demonstrations is an exhibition presented on the online project space Skelf. Viewable online only, the exhibition presents four videos – originally posted on Youtube and echoing 'how to' videos. The videos present actions that offset presumptions about authorship and site in relation to 'performative' art-making in two ways. Each of the four videos are plainly demonstrations, as in showing viewers – iterating the DIY vernacular – 'how to' make actions that he/she may or may not do – rather than the performative imperative of 'must do'. Demonstrations thus fundamentally undermines, or immanently resists, performative art-making; the 'works' are negated immanently by subtitles suggesting complete contingency ("you may do this... and may not") and speculative engagements with readily consumable and common materials, such as elastics and vacuum cleaners. This includes foods such as pretzels. An introductory statement, written by artist Francesco Gagliardi, playfully reinterprets languages used as subtitles within the videos. |
