10 × 10 (2011) & Tall buildings (2011)

Wood, J and Harrison, P (2017) 10 × 10 (2011) & Tall buildings (2011). In: Jeu et Diversion: Festival d'Art Contemporain - 9th Edition, Art Souterrain, Montreal, Canada, 4 - 26 March 2017.

Item Type: Exhibition
Creators: Wood, J and Harrison, P
Abstract: Since Wood and Harrison's first collaboration in 1993, their video works have evolved from single shot 'studies' filmed against neutral backgrounds to longer pieces in which a sequence of actions unfold within constructed locations. The videos maintain a strict internal logic, with the action directly related to the duration of the work. Inside this 'logical world' action is allowed to happen for no apparent reason, tensions build between the environment and its inhabitant, and the influences on the work are intentionally mixed. In 10×10 (2011), a camera tracks down the outside of an office block, looking into a series of identical rooms. In each scenario, stories are implied but not explained as solitary characters manipulate the office furniture and other objects in order to pass the time.

The will to have fun is inexorably linked to human nature. Every period and nation is characterized by its games, its celebrations, its music or its dance. Synonymous with pleasure, relaxation and sharing, play as an activity is ephemeral, has no apparent utility and follows voluntarily agreed-upon rules.

Art Souterrain, a non-profit organization founded in 2009, showcases each year international contemporary art institutions, artists, and the architectural and cultural heritage of downtown Montreal’s underground city. As a unique contemporary art festival in North America, Art Souterrain aims to make art accessible to a wider audience by taking it out of it’s traditional exhibition spaces.
